What Is a General Consultation?
A general consultation is a standard appointment with one of our GPs to discuss your health concerns, symptoms, or questions. It is the foundation of primary healthcare and covers a wide range of health needs, from a simple illness to more complex ongoing conditions.
During a general consultation, your GP will:
- Listen to your concerns and take a thorough history
- Examine you as clinically appropriate
- Discuss possible causes and next steps
- Arrange any required tests, investigations, or referrals
- Provide prescriptions, health plans, or other documentation where needed
Standard consultations at Lismore Doctors are up to 15 minutes. If your concern is complex or you have multiple issues to discuss, please let our reception team know when booking so we can allow enough time for your appointment.
What Can a General Consultation Help With?
Our GPs see patients for a wide variety of health concerns during general consultations, including:
- Colds, flu, infections, and other acute illnesses
- Skin conditions and minor skin concerns
- Digestive issues and abdominal complaints
- Headaches, fatigue, and general unwellness
- Musculoskeletal pain and injuries
- Allergies and respiratory conditions
- High blood pressure, cholesterol, and other health indicators
- Diabetes and blood sugar management
- Mental health concerns
- Preventive health and lifestyle advice
- Referrals to specialists and allied health professionals

This list is not exhaustive. If you have a health concern and are unsure whether a general consultation is the right appointment type, please call us on (02) 5658 5644 and our team will point you in the right direction.
Routine Health Check-Ups
You don’t need to be unwell to see a GP. Routine health check-ups are an important part of staying on top of your health and catching potential issues before they become bigger problems.
Regular check-ups may include a review of your blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, blood sugar levels, and other key health indicators. Your GP can also discuss lifestyle factors, preventive health measures, and any screening tests that may be relevant to your age and health history.
If you haven’t seen a GP in a while, booking a general check-up is a great place to start.
Chronic Condition Management
For patients living with ongoing health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, heart disease, or arthritis, regular GP consultations are an essential part of managing your health and maintaining your quality of life.
Our GPs can work with you to develop a personalised management plan, monitor your condition over time, adjust treatments as needed, and coordinate care with specialists and allied health providers. If you are eligible, your GP may develop a GP Management Plan and Team Care Arrangement to help you access a broader range of services.
