Immunisations and Vaccinations in Lismore, NSW
Staying up to date with vaccinations is an important part of maintaining your health and the health of those around you. At Lismore Doctors, we provide immunisation services for children and adults in line with current Australian government guidelines and recommendations.
Our team is here to answer your questions, discuss your options, and help you make informed decisions about vaccination for yourself and your family.
What Are Vaccines and How Do They Work?
Vaccines work by helping your immune system recognise and respond to specific diseases. When you receive a vaccine, your immune system is prompted to build a defence against the targeted disease-causing organism. This means that if you are exposed to that disease in the future, your immune system may be better prepared to respond.
Vaccination is widely recognised by Australian health authorities as one of the most effective public health tools available. The Australian Government’s National Immunisation Program (NIP) provides recommendations on which vaccines are advised at different stages of life.
Immunisation Services at Lismore Doctors
Our clinic provides a range of immunisation services for eligible patients, including:
- Childhood immunisations in line with the National Immunisation Program schedule
- Adolescent and adult vaccinations
- Seasonal flu vaccinations
- Travel vaccinations
If you are unsure which vaccines are recommended for your age, health history, or travel plans, speak with one of our GPs. They can review your immunisation history and discuss the options that may be appropriate for your individual circumstances.
Childhood Immunisations
The National Immunisation Program outlines a recommended vaccination schedule for children from birth through to adolescence. Following the recommended schedule helps ensure children are vaccinated at the most appropriate time for their age and development.
If your child has missed a vaccination or you are unsure where they are up to on the schedule, our GPs can review their immunisation history and advise on next steps. If you are new to the Lismore area, our team is happy to help you get your child’s vaccinations back on track.
Adult and Catch-Up Vaccinations
Vaccination is not only for children. Adults may benefit from catch-up vaccinations or boosters depending on their age, health status, occupation, and lifestyle. Your GP can review your personal vaccination history and discuss whether any additional vaccines may be worth considering for your situation.
Seasonal Flu Vaccinations
An annual flu vaccination is recommended by Australian health authorities for most people aged six months and over, with certain groups given higher priority. The flu vaccine is updated each year to account for the strains most likely to be circulating in the upcoming flu season.
Some patients may be eligible to receive the flu vaccine at no cost under the National Immunisation Program. Our team can advise you on eligibility when you book.
Travel Vaccinations
If you are planning to travel overseas, some destinations may require or recommend specific vaccinations before you depart. Recommendations vary depending on your destination, travel itinerary, and personal health history.
We recommend booking a travel health consultation well in advance of your departure date to allow enough time for any required vaccinations to take effect. Our GPs can discuss the general recommendations for your destination and advise on appropriate next steps.
Please note that travel vaccinations are not covered under the National Immunisation Program and will incur a private fee. Our reception team will advise you of applicable costs before your appointment.
A Note on Vaccination and Individual Health
Vaccination decisions are personal and should be made in consultation with your GP. Our doctors will always take into account your individual health history, current medications, and any other relevant factors before discussing vaccination options with you.
If you have questions or concerns about a particular vaccine, we encourage you to raise them with your GP. We are here to provide clear, factual information so you can make informed decisions about your health and the health of your family.
Fees and Bulk Billing
Some vaccines provided under the National Immunisation Program are available at no cost to eligible patients. Other vaccinations, including travel vaccines and some adult vaccines, will incur a private fee regardless of Medicare eligibility.
All patients with a valid Medicare card are bulk billed for eligible consultations. However, please be aware that the cost of some vaccines and their administration may not be covered under bulk billing. Our reception team will always advise you of any applicable fees before your appointment.
